China and ASEAN have made encouraging progress in bilateral economic and trade cooperation since the completion of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area.
For example, the China-ASEAN trade volume increased to 39.1 billion U.S. dollars over January and February 2010, a substantial year-on-year increase of 66 percent, of which China's exports rose by 53 percent, and its imports rose by 80 percent over the same period of 2009, according to the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM). At present, China and ASEAN are each other's third largest trading partners.
Meanwhile, China-ASEAN two-way investments are on the rise. As of the end of February 2010, Chinese enterprises had invested a total of nearly 8.6 billion U.S. dollars in ASEAN countries, and the amount of investment is expected to reach 10 billion U.S. dollars by the end of 2010, indicating that ASEAN has become one of the main investment destinations for Chinese enterprises.
Moreover, the two sides have cooperated in fields such as infrastructure construction, agriculture, tourism and emergency relief for some time, and have achieved initial success.
