The volume of tourists visiting Hong Kong in the first quarter of 2010 reached about 9 million, an increase of nearly 17 percent compared to the same period last year. This is the highest figure ever recorded, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) announced on May 3.

The number of tourists who visited Hong Kong in March also reached about 3 million, increasing by more than 14 percent, reaching a record high for the month of March.

The number of tourists from Chinese mainland, Taiwan and most of the short-distance tourism markets exceeded that of the same period in 2008, said James Tien Pei-chun, chairman of the HKTB.

The other markets also are recovering gradually, with the Chinese mainland market taking the lead.

Due to the policy of "multiple-visit visas," Shenzhen residents can visit Hong Kong multiple times and as a result, the number of tourists from Shenzhen increased by nearly 19 percent, totaling over 5 million.
